Activities and the area

The pleasant climate of the Algarve and the still unspoilt, authentic countryside, added to the enormous choice of activities and the many beautiful beaches, make this region a perfect destination for short or long holidays throughout the year. Brejeira, situated between the hills of the interior in the centre of the Algarve, is the ideal starting point to explore the region.

Silves
A fifteen minute drive away lies Silves, a historic castle town that has earned the slow-city logo in 2008 (www.slowmovement.com). Sitting on the bench of the Arade River, with her walled castle from the times of the Mores, this very relaxed small city offers all needed facilities, including supermarkets, banks, a post office, restaurants…You can meander through the quiet, narrow, cobbled streets or languidly admire a Portuguese scene from one of the many terraces. Or you can actively dive into its history in one of the monuments or museums.

Beaches
From Silves, it’s only a ten minute drive to one of the heavenly bays on the south coast. If you prefer vast beaches surrounded by rough cliffs, you drive another half hour to the west coast, a beautiful, protected area, heaven for walkers, bikers and surfers.

Monchique
North-west of Brejeira, you look upon the highest mountain ranges of the Algarve: the Serra de Monchique. Bending roads through an oasis of old cork, eucalyptus and chestnut trees with spectacular panoramic views over the coast, leads you in half an hour to the town of Monchique. This is the Mecca of walkers and mountain-bikers, though you can also make beautiful trips by car.

Daytrips
Towards the east or the west, plenty of interesting day-trips through the countryside introduce you to the Portuguese life in small villages. We are more than happy to give you the necessary information to make your day a success.

Via Algarviana
Recently, a new initiative to promote ecological tourism in the inlands, the Via Algarviana (www.viaalgarviana.org), a hiking or mountain-biking track of more than 300 km that goes from east to west Algarve, passes right under Brejeira. Hikers who wish to walk the part to Monchique, for example, can be picked up by car in exchange for a fuel fee. For the tough ones who walk the entire track, there is of course the possibility, after a long day hiking, to be pampered and recover and rest in all quietness at our place.

Activities
The endless range of activities in the area suits anyone, sportive or relaxed, young or old. Whether you like horse riding or golfing, beaches or town trips, hiking paths or theme parks, biking, canoeing, fishing, diving, shopping or eating at local restaurants, we are very happy to give you all necessary help and local information, adjusted to your personal wishes. You can, of course, hike right over the hills in the area surrounding Brejeira. And a couple of years ago, the works on the dam of Odelouca, only five minutes away, have been completed. Soon, you will be able to swim in the more than 15 km long artificial lake.

Picking and distillation of medronho
In the months of October to December, when the medronho picking season is full on, you may like to feel one with nature while experiencing the nearly meditative activity of picking the beautiful bright red fruit. And maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be around when the distillation of the medronho starts, a few months after the picking, to experience one of the most highly valued Algarvian old traditions.
